There's a whole lotta ARRRGGGGH going on...

I only wish it were in honor of Talk Like a Pirate Day.

Nope.

I've been testing the last epoxy coat now and then since it was applied in January. (Where does the time go???) It seems we (no finger pointing here) did not do a fabulous job of mixing the fiberglass wetting batch of epoxy. At first, we thought, well, it is cold in the garage, and maybe it will take longer to cure. Each test produced the same result: tacky uncured epoxy, easily dented with a fingernail. As the weeks wore on...

[time passed]

A week ago, or so, when the weather was soooo nice and warm, we made the decision to consult with the experts at Newfound Woodworks, to see what we can do about our dilemma of sticky, uncured epoxy. I explained that we thought it was only the last batch mixed to fill in some bare spots that was off, the other epoxy felt cured. Michael explained that acetone would remove the uncured epoxy. And we could then proceed with the epoxying.

Or so we thought.

Actually, it turned out to be the whole shebang, including the fiberglass that was involved. We discovered that while trying to remove the bad spots. We took the kayak out into the driveway to be able to see the progress better and wound up removing the fiberglass as well as the bad epoxy. The fiberglass came off surprisingly easy. It had been a suggestion of Michael at Newfound Woodworks to put the kayak out in the sun - he said that bubbles under the fiberglass would develop in the warmth of the sun and would be better to deal with now, rather than later when the kayak was being used.

Right. It was easy.

So now I have a naked kayak again, the first epoxy coat is still viable, so a light sanding to rough it up a tad and we will be able to perform take two.

Keep in touch!
